Lori Laurie Foreman

As Their

Disability Education Coordinator for People with Disabilities & the Elderly

Lori has been chosen as a 2007 “Fellow” to work under a New Voices' - Ford Foundation Human Rights

Fellowship in Washington, D.C.  Her Fellowship is being administered by Gulf Coast Teaching Family

Services. Gulf Coast Teaching Family Services, Inc.  is a private, non-profit corporation founded in 1983

in Louisiana. The organization was established to provide comprehensive human service programs and

assistance to citizens with "special needs".  It is dedicated to establishing and operating community

based facilities, services and programs providing consultation, training, and educational services to

individuals and their families which promote least restrictive treatment/placement alternatives. As

Disability Education Coordinator for People with Disabilities and the Elderly, Lori focuses on educating

individuals about various services and resources available to them in their regions, coordinates and

facilitates educational trainings, utilizes various medias for publicizing the events, collaborates with

governmental and other non-profit agencies to identify educational needs, addresses those needs with

workshops, develops a comprehensive resource directory for families and organizes groups of

consumers to advocate for policy changes. She is currently hosting an interview talk show entitled

"Pause Cafe'" (Coffee Break)  on Acadiana Open Channel in  Lafayette,  LA.  Guests are representatives

from Medicaid, Social Security, Attorneys, Dept. of Ed., Red Cross and other entities. Pause Cafe' is

available on You Tube. She is also working on establishing emergency evacuation shelters for people

with orthopedic disabilities as well as developmental and emotional disabilities. Lori is the mother of a

child with both physical and mental challenges and understands personally the needs of individuals with

"issues"  both before and after the hurricanes in South Louisiana. Lori is hosting several Informational

Health Fairs and Legal Forums in the surrounding rural areas to bringing information to people  in their

“back yards”. Information on housing, disaster preparedness, Medicaid, Social Security, school issues,

transportation and  other issues are covered at these events.  Though she isn’t able to provide direct

services to people, her job is to locate and facilitate assistance to those in need.
